Happy Monday, babes! I’m so excited to introduce you all to the very first lifestyle item in The Calm Collective Etsy shop. I’ve been working on this mug for what feels like forever (but was really only about five months), so it’s gratifying to finally be able to list it for sale. ;)
As most of you know by now, my journey towards living a calm and simple life hasn’t been overnight. It takes a lot of work to break old habits, bring forth new ones, and to re-channel your mental state. I was always on the go, always anxious, drowning in busy work – and always so close to a nervous breakdown. Something had to give – so I decided I had to change. My depression since losing my dad was taking over my life, and I couldn’t seem to escape the darkness. So I got to work.
- I cleaned house (not dust bunnies and the like. I mean I purged my house)
- I stopped saying yes to commitments that didn’t fulfill me.
- I bought more plants.
- I started really budgeting my money.
- I stopped impulse purchases (for the most part – work in progress!)
- I let go of some friendships and welcomed new ones.
- I stopped creating busy work, and chose to embrace the slow moments instead.
It’s been about ten months since I had this ah-ha moment – this real desire to change, and while things still aren’t second nature, they’re getting close. I was telling a friend the other day that I photographed a wedding a couple of weeks ago in Miami that had a wedding planner. After I had posted some sneak peeks to my Facebook page and photo Instagram account, she left a comment that said:
simplycouturewed: You were the most calm, down to earth wedding photographer we have worked with. All the photos are just stunning!
I swear I almost started crying. Because here’s the thing – whenever we’re trying to make a major lifestyle change, we can only hope that those around us are taking notice. To have someone define me as calm (especially during a busy event such as a wedding) meant that what I had been working so hard on was finally paying off. I was organically becoming the person I’ve been wanting to become.
So what does this have to do with the new coffee mug you might be wondering?! ;)
Well I don’t know about you, but I’m an extremely visual person. I love reading books that are centered around simple living and minimalism. Most of the things I pin on Pinterest revolve around quotes that slow me down, rather than pump me up. So when I was in the brainstorming phase for these ceramic coffee mugs, I knew I wanted a message that was short and sweet; something that reminded us all to enjoy the silence, to take it in all, and to toss the idea that being “insanely busy” is living. (Spoiler Alert: it’s not.)
So that’s how I came up with “That Calm Life”
It’s become my motto, really. My morning message when I wake up with my coffee, and my evening message when I wind down with tea (or lets be real, sometimes rosé makes its way in there, too!)
* * So today through Wednesday the 12th, you can get your mug with FREE SHIPPING when you use the code “bethecalm” at checkout :)
As always, thank you so much for all of the support throughout the years and throughout this journey. I’m so glad you’re here – x
