Wrap Sweater (so incredibly soft | I also have it in this color) • High Wasted Flared Jeans (also have them in this color) • Neck Scarf (similar) • Earrings • Pendent Necklace • Green Stone Ring • Gold Band • Rope Ring
Happy Wednesday! Today’s the day • my 2018 fall capsule wardrobe is finally live (it took me a bit to curate it just how I wanted it). I didn’t really stick to a specific number this time around, rather gravitated towards a color palette (which you’ll pick up on as you scroll down below), specific brands (Leith is clearly my go-to), and fabrics (the softer the better).
But first thing’s first: what is a capsule wardrobe?
I’m sure by now so many of you have heard the term Capsule Wardrobe. I know I’ve heard it hundreds of times and would always respond with the same old statement, “there’s no way I could do that.” I also said that about being vegan, and then there I was, almost 5 years in (but no longer, just to be clear!) While I’ve definitely improved with my ability to no longer impulse buy, rather, buy the things that I actually need and will find real value in long term, I still struggle with feeling overwhelmed by my options. So enough was enough, and I finally decided that there was no harm done to just give it a try. I have to say, putting together my first capsule wardrobe back in 2017 was actually so much fun and therapeutic. I was able to sift through the items that I already owned, knew I loved, and buy select pieces that I knew were missing. (read: sneakers that don’t have black Adidas stripes) I ended up with 30 pieces – only 30! and felt like a new woman by the time I organized and arranged everything just so. Now the key piece here is that I paid mind to not be like anyone else. There are so many bloggers out there with an array of styles, and it’s hard to not compare and wonder if we, too, should be wearing y and z. But the thing is, that’s just wasted money. At the end of the day, you’re still you. You will always come back to that (thank goodness), so it’s imperative that we listen to our inner voices when determining what it is we want for our seasonal wardrobe.
If you’re like me when I first started out and feel a little hesitant with the trend of the capsule wardrobe, I hear you loud and clear. But honestly? I can’t recommend it enough. Peace of mind and lack of choices is actually a really beautiful thing that we too often overlook. We’re so used to the overwhelm, a slew of options, the lugging of multiple suitcases and sore backs from carrying them around the airport. We’ve become accustom to being “okay” with what’s in our closet rather than “in love” with any of it. I for one am so, so tired of feeling this way – and the amazing part? We’re in full, total control of it all. We just have to give ourselves the permission to make a change.
So what do you think? Will you start your own capsule wardrobe?
Mind you, it doesn’t have to be 30 pieces or any set number for that matter. But I challenge you to give it purpose and structure. Each item should be able to flow with another. In this case, less really is more.
So lets dive in to the pieces that I’ve chosen to wear throughout the fall season (and here’s hoping that fall lasts longer than a month!)
Bottoms & Dresses
WIDE LEG TAN JEANS BY ACE FROM ASOS
These aren’t something I would have gravitated towards a year ago, but I love the simplicity and the modern feel they give off. I find that jeans like this are best pairs with a tighter top. If you purchase these, make sure to size down one size.
BLACK SKINNY HIGH RISE JEANS BY NEW LOOK FROM ASOS
My new favorite brand of jeans. This label of New Look designed high rise jeans that seriously shape your body in the best of ways. I ended up getting them in 2 different shades of denim (see here and here) as well to replace the Gap ones I’ve had for years. I’m hooked.
The perfect wear for fall weather. Whether you’re working from home, heading to the office – basically whatever is on your agenda, these fleece lined leggings are a solid go-to. (and they’re so warm!)
LEATHER LEGGINGS FROM H&M (I also have them in this color) / SIMILAR and fit like a glove.
I love that I can style these to be dressed up or dressed down with any of the other pieces from my capsule. They’re thick enough to keep me warm, but still allow my legs to breathe.
ANKLE “PAJAMA” PANTS BY 1901 FROM NORDSTROM
I’ve been looking for a pair of pants like this for quite a while now, and these are the best hands down. The fit is really tailored, but still relaxed, and pairs best with a white long sleeved bodysuit or this sweater. I’ve gotten so many compliments on this little number, and who doesn’t love getting away with wearing pajamas outside the home? (I sized down one size • from Medium to Small)
CROP HIGH RISE FLARE JEANS BY LEITH FROM NORDSTROM
By now you guys all know that Leith is my favorite brand on the planet (and I feel like it’s all I wear these days), and when I tried on these jeans, I was hooked. The fabric is like butter, and the stretch is so forgiving, yet they stay put all day long. Paired with a low block heel or even low sneakers, these can easily be dressed up or dressed down.
WHITE RAW EDGE JEANS BY MADEWELL FROM NORDSTROM
Finally. A pair of white jeans that look flattering (not easy to come by, it turns out). I wore these yesterday actually paired with this top, and it’s definitely going to be one of my go-to outfits this season. I’m also not someone who follows the “no white after Labor Day rule” – clearly.
JAMIE HIGH RISE FLARE JEANS BY TOPSHOP FROM NORDSTROM
I never thought I’d be into buying flare jeans after the early 2000’s, but alas, here I am, loving every minute and buying them in black as well.
One of my favorite pieces from this season’s capsule, hands down. It’s so incredibly soft, stretchy and versatile. I’ve dressed it up with some heels, I’ve wandered around my home barefoot, and I’ve paired it with some casual sneakers and a cropped sweatshirt. You can’t go wrong. I recommend sizing down one size. (you can see me wearing it in a recent blog post here)
LEOPARD SHIFT DRESS FROM ASOS
This would generally be considered outside of my comfort zone, but I’m finding a lot of love for this print these days. This shift dress is a sweet addition to this fall’s line up, and is usually paired with black booties and a leather jacket. The slit on the side gives it a less boxy feel, and makes it so much more feminine.
SHEER MOCK TURTLENECK LONG SLEEVED TOP (pictured above) BY LEITH FROM NORDSTROM • I also have it in this color
One of my favorite things in my closet right now is this top. I honestly just wear it with a plain black sports bra underneath so it’s not “too risky” ;) It polishes off any look, whether I’m wearing it with tailored pants, jeans, or a skirt.
TEXTURED TIE FRONT TOP BY MADEWELL FROM NORDSTROM
I love this top mainly for the color, but also the fit. It’s relaxed, and a solid go-to when I’m meeting up with friends for lunch or have a photoshoot.
STITCH TURTLENECK SWEATER BY LEITH FROM NORDSTROM
I’m not a huge fan of turtleneck sweaters, but this one is so soft that I hardly forget I’m wearing anything at all. I also love the rich fall color, and how it’s slightly cropped so it isn’t too frumpy.
WRAP SWEATER BY LEITH FROM NORDSTROM • I also have it in this color
Yet another thing by Leith ;) I told you guys I’m obsessed. This wrap sweater is a must have for your spring/fall/winter capsule, and is probably one of my favorite things hanging in my closet. Did I also mention that it’s soft? You’re shocked, I know.
COZY MOCK NECK SWEATER BY LEITH FROM NORDSTROM • I also have it in this color and this color
The perfect fall sweater. There’s really not much else to say about this. I’ve worn it with wide leg jeans for a casual relaxed look, but my favorite way to wear it is with leather leggings.
FAUX WRAP PULLOVER SWEATER BY MADEWELL FROM NORDSTROM
Another sweater similar to this one, but again I love this color so much (signature!) especially for the season.
WHITE BODYSUIT FROM NORDSTROM • SIMILAR
This stays in my closet all year round (as you can see from previous capsules), and I’ll always be a fan of a good bodysuit. It’s the perfect staple to wear underneath a leather jacket or a cardigan.
MOCK NECK TEE BY B.P FROM NORDSTROM • I also have it in this color
Ultra casual and super soft, this can be paired with just about any bottom you like. I personally love it for the warmer fall days that we’ve been having here in Chicago, tucked in to these jeans.
I wear these multiple times a week (guilty!), and it feels like I’m wearing pajamas. Size down because it’s meant to be oversized already (I have a small). I wear it with leggings or skinny jeans, sneakers or booties, and get compliments on the happy color all the time.
Booties are a must in the fall, and I almost always stick with black. They’re so versatile, and I mainly wear these with my leggings for that “rough around the edges” yet polished look.
BLOCK HEELED SUEDE BOOTIE BY B.P. FROM NORDSTROM • similar
I love these with a passion, and the best part is that they don’t take any breaking-in time (at least they didn’t for me!) They also come in a really lovely tan color, if that’s your style.
You have to have a good OTK boot, and so far these are the best ones I’ve owned. I can wear these for hours on end without feeling the need to take them off, and the best part is that they don’t pinch behind my knee. So that’s a win in my book. I love the color, too.
These are such a steal for the price, I almost thought they were too good to be true. But they’re amazing – and again, no break-in time! I wear these at least once a week.
REEBOK SNEAKERS FROM NORDSTROM • I trade off between those and these
A new favorite (and a lucky find by my mom when we were shopping together the other day) are these vintage style Reeboks. I had to laugh when I found out they were coming back in style, but now that I have them, I love them and find an excuse to wear them as much as possible. (sidetone: they’re super cute with leather leggings and a longer sweater)
Same story as above, different shoes. A classic slip on mule is such a good staple for your closet. Plus they can transition into spring and summer, too.
It took me a bit to get used to having a wedge on a tall boot, but now that I found these, I love them. I really only wear them with leggings, but they dress up the look instantly.
ANKLE STRAP BLOCK SANDAL BY Steve Madden FROM NORDSTROM
Another staple • a minimal tan/nude block heel. I’ll wear an open toed sandal until the snow finally hits, so these end up getting a lot of wear in the fall.
Never did I ever think that I would own a leopard coat, but I bought this on a whim and now I reach for this one almost always. It’s SO comfortable, a little form fitting (so you don’t look frumpy) and the best part is that it can make even a gym outfit look cute.
VERA MODA TEDDY COAT FROM ASOS
I debated on keeping this because a teddy jacket was never something that I gravitated towards, but I bought it, wore it around my house for a couple of days, and finally decided that I did in fact love it. Now whenever I wear it, I kid you not I get at least 2 women a day asking me where I bought it. I think what makes it so special is that it’s form fitting, so just like the leopard coat above, you don’t leave the house looking frumpy.
MOTO JACKET from Nordstrom
It took me a while to find the perfect “leather” jacket, and for years I was wearing such a poor quality one that left my arms feeling stiff and the rest of me incredibly uncomfortable. Since it’s something I love to wear, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a good one, and I’m so happy that I did. I love this jacket, and it’s so perfect for fall.
LAPEL WOOL BLEND TRENCH COAT from AMAZON • I also have it in this color
Another Amazon gem. For under $30, I’m not sure how these coats actually look and fit as well as they do (so I did what any logical woman would do and bought it in 2 colors). This is probably my every day go-to, and is perfect since you can easily dress it up or down.
How cool are these though, really?! And they’re so lightweight.
6MM 14K GOLD BAND FROM ETSY
I bought this ring for myself a while ago as a gift to myself, just because. It’s not cheap, but that’s kind of the point. I wanted to invest in something nice for myself and every day I put it on, I feel a whole lot of self love.
ADELLA BRALETTE FROM FREE PEOPLE • I also have it in this color and this color
I wear these pretty much every day. My friend Lindsay turned me on to them, and now I’m obsessed. For larger chested girls, it’s hard to find a bralette you can actually get away with wearing, but Free People finally got it right.
RESIN & METAL EARRINGS BY LEITH FROM NORDSTROM
I love these statement earrings that are also super light weight. I bought them for myself after I booked a big shoot (they’re not expensive!) but they still give me some pride every time I wear them because it was yet again, a gift to myself for working super hard.
WIDE BRIM WOOL HAT IN GRAY FROM AMAZON
I’ve turned into a hat lady. Who knew? I never thought that would be me, but now I wear this probably a couple of times a week.
This is now my every day bag and doubles as my computer bag. You can fit so much into this purse, and you’ll get at least a compliment a day. The quality is so good it’s kind of hard to believe that it isn’t more expensive.
AGJC MINIMALIST GOLD “HOOP” EARRINGS • I wear these just about every single day
My every day earrings unless I’m opting for a statement piece. They’re so lightweight I really forget that I’m wearing them most of the time. (I even wear them in the shower and they hold up perfectly)
So I bought a Archangel Michael pendent necklace when I was in LA this past summer as a birthday gift to myself, and while this isn’t the same one, it’s almost identical. I never take it off. It’s my favorite. (I’m getting really good. at this whole self-love thing)
FUAX LEATHER BACKPACK BY MATT & NAT FROM NORDSTROM
My forever favorite backpack. I bring this whenever I travel or go away for a weekend. It’s vegan, which is awesome, and again – you’ll get at least one person asking you where you got it.
GOLD DOUBLE ROPE RING BY BYLIA JEWELS FROM ETSY
Another every day wear (it’s been over a year since I’ve taken this off!) I love this ring so much. You can find more like it in this post here where I talk about my favorite minimalist jewelry.
Lastly, I won’t lie to you and say that building a capsule wardrobe is easy breezy. There’s some light work required, and many internal conversations you’ve got to have with yourself. I’ve made a little cheat sheet to help guide you, so feel free to Pin it or print it out – I hope it’s helpful! I’ve also created a FREE capsule wardrobe worksheet that you can fill out to keep track of your final edits. The best part? You can print out multiple copies to use each season.
Be sure to visit over at Instagram where I’ll be sharing real updates on how it’s going, as well as photos from my outfits from time to time. Happy capsuling! x
